Everything You Need to Know About OCTG

OCTG is short for oil country tubular goods. It’s basically the family of steel pipe products used to drill and complete oil and gas wells. These pipes have three main types: casing, drill, and tubing. Each type serves a different purpose and can perform best in a particular setting.

Types of OCTG

If you’re planning to buy OCTG, know there are 3 primary categories. These are drill pipe, casing, and tubing. 

Casing is a large-diameter structural pipe. It is attached to the wellbore to stabilize it and prevent collapse. The diameters of these pipes range from 4.5 inches to 20 inches.

The second type is tubing pipe. It’s a smaller-diameter pipe installed inside the production casing. It serves as the conduit that transports crude oil or natural gas from underground reservoirs to surface production facilities. 

The third type is drill pipe. They’re heavy-duty, seamless steel tubes used during the actual drilling phase of the well.

How OCTG Works in a Well

In a typical well, operations are conducted through a 3-step process. First, the hole is drilled using a string. Then the section is sealed by adding a cement casing. The tubing is finally installed to produce oil and gas. 

You basically drill with one string, secure the well with a different piece, and then bring hydrocarbons to the surface through a third string. 

When the oil/gas reaches the surface, careful handling becomes important. The thread protectors are activated and lifted with pipe elevators. Following the controlled handling practices is also important to prevent damage during the rig-up.

Line Pipe VS OCTG

Line pipe is basically used to transport oil and gas after production. But OCTG remains functional within the wellbore during drilling/extraction. The key difference lies in their function. OCTG is used in downhole applications, whereas line pipe operates in stable above-ground environments.

Why OCTG Standards Matter 

Unlike water pipes or other common structural components, OCTG products are manufactured in accordance with the strict specifications of the American Petroleum Institute (API). This is done to ensure that the products perform exceptionally even in demanding environments. 

These standards also give engineers predictable performance metrics they must adhere to.

Applications of OCTG

Apart from drilling the well, they can also be applied in complex horizontal drilling (which differs from vertical drilling). Engineers can inject water, gas, or steam deep underground to force trapped oils toward production wells. In geothermal energy, they’re utilized to drill and extract high-temperature steam and water from deep beneath the Earth’s crust.

In some cases, the compressed carbon dioxide can be injected safely into depleted underground reservoirs. OCTG products are also used for this purpose
